Yoga After Hip Replacement

Moving Beyond Recovery

A hip replacement can give you the opportunity to move without pain, to live again. Getting back to the things you enjoy isn't always just about physical recovery. It's also about rebuilding confidence in your body and learning to trust it again.

At Prana Yoga Northampton, we explore how gentle, adapted yoga can support your next steps after hip replacement.

Whether you're returning to yoga or considering it for the first time, the focus is on building strength, mobility and balance, so you can rediscover the joy in movement and everyday life.

Is Yoga Right for You After Hip Replacement?

For many people, absolutely.

Whether you've practised for years or you're completely new to yoga, there will be ways to explore movement that work for your new hip.

Everyone's surgery and recovery are different, and some movements may need to be adapted or avoided depending on advice you've received from your surgeon or physiotherapist.

Once you've been given the go-ahead to practise yoga, we can start gently, build gradually, always focusing on what feels right for you.

With me, it's not about achieving the perfect pose. It's about building confidence in your body, exploring what you can do so you can enjoy moving freely again.

Progress, Not Perfection.

I've Been Where You Are

In February 2026, I had a total hip replacement. As a yoga teacher, movement has always been an important part of my life, so I knew that getting back to the things I loved would mean more than simply recovering from surgery.

What I hadn't anticipated was quite how much of a roller coaster recovery could be. There's been joy in discovering what my new hip can do, but also frustration when I can't quite do everything I'd hoped for. And yes, there's been the very real worry about dislocation and the disappointment of occasional setbacks.

I've learned that rebuilding strength and mobility is only part of the journey. Learning to trust my body again, accepting that progress isn't always straightforward and being patient with a body that's lived with chronic pain and undergone major surgery are just as important.

That experience continues to shape how I teach yoga. I understand the desire to do more, the frustration of limitations and the importance of celebrating what your body can do today, rather than what you think it should be doing.

It's why I'm passionate about helping others explore yoga after hip replacement, with encouragement, understanding and no pressure to achieve a particular pose.

Rebuilding Confidence Through Yoga

After a hip replacement, even familiar movements can feel weird. You might find yourself hesitating before bending, balancing or trying something you once did without thinking.

Yoga allows you to reconnect with your body, gently building strength, improving balance and exploring mobility at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Through adapted poses, supported movements and an emphasis on body awareness, we'll work on developing confidence in the way you move, with no pressure to keep up with the class.

It's about discovering what your body is capable of now, gradually building your confidence to enjoy what matters to you.

Progress. Not Perfection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga After Hip Replacement

1. Can I practise yoga after a total hip replacement?

For many people, yes. Having a hip replacement doesn't necessarily mean giving up yoga. The important thing is understanding your individual circumstances, following the advice of your surgeon or physiotherapist and choosing movements that are suitable for you.

2. When can I return to yoga after hip replacement surgery?

There's no single timetable that works for everyone. Your recovery, the type of surgery you've had and any precautions you've been given will influence when you can return. Once you've been cleared to practise yoga, we can explore a gentle, gradual approach.

3. Which yoga poses might need modifying or avoiding?

Some poses involve deep bending, twisting, extreme hip rotation or stretching around the hip and may need to be adapted or avoided. Your individual precautions will guide what's appropriate, and we'll focus on movements that work for you rather than trying to achieve a particular pose.

4. Can beginners start yoga after hip replacement?

Absolutely, provided you've been cleared to practise. You don't need previous yoga experience or a particular level of flexibility. We can start with gentle movements, explore what feels comfortable and build from there.

5. Can gentle yoga help me rebuild confidence in movement?

Yoga provides an opportunity to develop strength, balance, mobility and body awareness. If you feel hesitant about moving after surgery, a gentle, adapted approach can help gradually rebuild confidence in what your body can do.

6. Should I choose a private session or a group yoga class?

If you're unsure about practising yoga, a private 1-to-1 session can be a good starting point. It gives us time to explore your mobility, confidence and goals together. If you're comfortable practising with others, we can also discuss whether one of my regular classes might suit you.
